TC OPEN: Top 16 Matches

Just a reminder; we are still operating under the same FORMAT RULES.

The first round round of elimination completed without any issues, and we are now quickly headed for a final table showdown. The TOP 16 matches are strong player vs strong player at every table, with every surviving list dangerous in its way. Who will thrive under pressure, and who will make game throwing mistakes? Both Remi (our current champion) and Oli (our former champion) are in the mix, and we know they are made of iron — can they be derailed from a final table showdown against one another? Who has what it takes… to be the champion?

Good luck to all players in the coming rounds. I will not be putting a hard timer on each elimination round, but I will be posting a new article declaring the next round of match-ups week by week. This is the loose schedule for rounds — please try to keep to it if possible, and only play your games early/late if you must:

TOP 16Oct 16th to Oct 22nd.
TOP 8Oct 23rd to Oct 29th. After Oct 29th, all unscored TOP 16 games are losses.
TOP 4Oct 30th to Nov 5th. After Nov 5th, all unscored TOP 8 games are losses.

If needed, extra time will be given after Nov 5th to TOP 4 games still in progress.

FINAL TABLE — The week of Nov 6th to Nov 12th, unless delayed.

I plan to take a short break from running tournaments, after this one completes. Sign-ups for the next TC Open will not be posted until sometime in December. I plan to have the first 2018 tournament in January-April, like I did this year. Each TC Open takes almost 4 months to complete, so don’t miss your chance to sign up — missing your chance will mean waiting until May for the next opportunity.

TOP 16 PAIRINGS
Here is a link to the Challonge Bracket.
————————————————–
#1) Warmaster91 (former champion)
-98-
43 Poe w/ BB-8, PTL, Autothrusters, Comms Relay, Black One
55 Dash w/ VI, Rey, Snuggling Comp, Countermeasures, HLC, Outrider, Burnout SLAM

16) GreenDragoon
-100-
34 Quickdraw w/ Collision Detector, VI, G Chips, SOT, Harpoon
35 Vader w/ TIE/X1, AdvTC, VI, G Chips, Harpoon
31 Inquisitor w/ VI, G Chips, TIE/V1, Harpoon

Oli has his work cut out for him if he wants to regain the title — his PS 9 list faces a PS 10-11 one, and trio of missiles means he can’t just trade shots hoping for the best. But Oli’s list isn’t without tools. Dash has a turret to help isolate enemy ships and not eat an alpha-strike, plus Countermeasures to short circuit a single Harpoon launch or a pursuing Vader. Dash also has Burnout SLAM, which could let him slip right by Imperial arcs before combat ever begins. Poe will have Focus + Evade + Autothrusters to try and survive any missile barrage that comes his way, and Black One to annoy Vader in a dogfight. Can Oli pull the old bait-n-switch well enough to get his squad chances to win? I think he can get past the Harpoons and make this a close game, which may make him the favorite here. Expect a Dash fly-by, a lurking Poe waiting to flank in safely, and Imperials caught in an awkward positional bind.

#8) LeoArthur
-100-
23 Biggs w/ R4-D6, IA
38 (x2) Rookie w/ R2, IA
26 Gold w/ R3-A2, TLT, BTL-A4
13 Bandit w/ G Chip, Thread Tracer

24) SGCalgary
-99-
61 Kenkirk w/ LW, Captive, Ysanne, Gunner, Thermal D
38 Quickdraw / FCS, Outmanuever, Frame, PA, SoT

Five guns against two is very difficult, and the combination of Biggs with a Stresshog should prove especially fatal to the slow moving Imperial duo. SGCalgary’s list lacks tools to take on his opponent’s list, other than one timely Thermal Detonator that might buy him valuable time. Both Imperial ships can fight on the run, so maybe one ship can kite while the other flees — but I don’t know what SGCalgary does once he is down to a single ship. Can Kenkirk’s durability carry an endgame vs multiple guns?

#4) Timanseb
-99-
23 Biggs w/ R4-D6, IA
18 Rex w/ Sabine’s Masterpiece, Jan, BMST
28 Jess w/ R2-D6, Adaptability, IA, PA
30 Thane w/ R3-A2, Jyn, AO

20) TzazikiMann
-100-
34 Vader w/ TIE/X1, AdvTC, VI, G Chips, Cruise Missile
35 Quickdraw w/ FCS, VI, G Chips, Cruise Missile
31 Inquisitor w/ PTL, Autothrusters, TIE/V1

With R4-D6 to blunt the Cruise Missiles and R3-A2 to bay Inquisitor, Timanseb’s list looks capable of giving Imperials a tough fight. I am unsure who has the edge here if Inquisitor can get a good flank to help, and the fight should become intricate quickly. This should one may remind veteran players of the way things used to be — Pilot Skill vs blocking, frequent red maneuvers by both players to keep guns on the enemy, and Biggs trying to stay alive vs a lot of enemy firepower. I can’t say either list has a significant advantage, and it should be a tense game.

#5) Theorist
-99-
60 (x4) Bandit w/ G Chips, Cruise Missile
39 (x3) Bandit w/ G Chips, Tracers

21) Sycho
-100-
45 Corran w/ R2-D2, FCS, PTL, Engine
55 Rey w/ Trick Shot, Finn, Chopper, Engine, MF 2.0

If my Cruise Missiles launch en masse, whatever I aim at will die quickly; but I have no slowing moving targets to find here. My ships crawl, while Sycho’s can dart around the board and will pick away at m if thy can. Possibly I can ambush one ship, but can I catch both targets before I run out of ships? I actually am not sure that I can. R2-D2 can win the day here far too easily. If things go just right I think I can muscle out the victory, but I sure wish Rey didn’t have that Engine. Sycho looks like the favorite to me here, but I will bring my A game and see what happens.

#2) Colossal
-100-
52 Nym w/ Havoc, Genius, Map, LW, LRS, TLT, Ex M, Cruise M, Pro Bomb, Conner Net
48 Miranda w/ Sabine, AdvSLAM, TLT, Ex M, Cluster Mines, Bomblet Generator

15) TalonCor
-99-
63 (x3) Marauder w/ Vaksai, G Chips, Failsafe, Ray Shield, BMST, Harpoon
36 (x2) Marauder w/ Vaksai, G Chips, Failsafe, Ray Shield, BMST, Tracers

Harpoon spam is deadly to a formation, but can Marauders navigate a heavily mined board while fighting TLT ships? Taloncor really has his work cut out for him to pick off ships, and may have a harder fight than I do this round. He has less health in his squad, less firepower, and won’t be able to aim his arcs as easily due to mines. With some careful play though, I think he has the same chance I do to kill off one ship and hunt the other. Colossal’s ships aren’t as fast moving as Sycho’s, and Miranda must be in combat range to regenerate. I wish TalonCor good hunting, but Colossal is the favorite here.

26) AgedWhiskey
-100-
22 Marauder w/ Vaksai, VT, G Chips, Failsafe, Cloaking Device, Harpoon
42 (x2) Marauder w/ Vaksai, VT, G Chips, Failsafe, BMST, Harpoon
36 (x2) Marauder w/ Vaksai, VT, G Chips, Failsafe, BMST, Tracers

23) Remi (current champion)
-100-
34 Vader w/ TIE/X1, AdvTC, VI, G Chips, Cruise Missile
35 Quickdraw w/ FCS, VI, G Chips, SoT, Cruise Missile
31 Inquisitor w/ PTL, Autothrusters, TIE/V1

One Marauder falls in trade for Vader or Quickdraw, then AgedWhiskey outguns Remi on the next turn to pull decisively ahead. Is there a way out of this scenario for Remi? I expect Imperials to fan out early and try for free flanking shots, but Vectored Thrusters could make surrounding the Marauder ball difficult. This should be a good game to watch and a tense match of avoiding even small mistakes, especially with Inquisitor staring at four copies of BMST. AgedWhiskey is the favorite here, but he’s against our current TC Open champion.

#3) Desco34
-97-
50 Miranda w/ Sabine, AdvSLAM, TLT, Extra M, Cluster Mines, Thermal D, Ion Bomb
47 Nym w/ Havoc, Genius, AdvS, VI, Engine, TLT, Bomblet Generator

19) DarrylM
-100-
49 Bossk w/ Fearlessness, Dengar, K-4, 4-LOM, G Chips, Crane, Cluster Missiles
24 NDru w/ Crack Shot, G Chips, Cluster Missiles, Glitterstim
27 Unkar w/ Cikatro, Tractor Array, PA, Cloaking Device, Cluster Mines

Unkar and Bossk make a deadly duo to set up  a target for quick death, if DarrylM can catch up to target. No  way for Bossk to aim at ships getting behind will definitely be an issue vs both Rebel ships, who can get past him in a hurry. Can a lurking Ndru gun do enough damage, as Desco34 avoids being shredded down by Bossk’s insane firepower? Darryl caught hard targets last round, and Unkar was a superstar. I know he can do it once more; this game should be sharp and fun to observe. But he may be the underdog again, as he matches more comfortably against a list like SGCalgary’s.

27) TsukudaJoe
-95-
48 Corran w/ R2-D2, AdvS, PTL, Engine, Seismic Torp
47 Nym w/ Havoc, Genius, AdvS, VI, Engine, TLT, Bomblet Generator

11) MrSunol
-100-
25 Jostero w/ Vaksai, Deadeye, G Chip, Failsafe, Harpoon, Crane
75 (x3) Ace w/ Vaksai, Deadeye, G Chip, Failsafe, Ray Shield, Harpoon, Crane

This is the one game to watch, if you can only catch one. Deadeye lets MrSunol fan out his ships to definitely launch missiles, and it won’t take long to kill one of TsukudaJoe’s ships once combat starts. Corran and Nym will be acing their hearts out to stay alive and whittle down the Khiraxz — it won’t take them that long, but one mistake and they die trying. Even fantastic acing though may not be enough. This will be game of hunter and prey, but if Joe can keep both ships alive for a while I think he wins the long game. At least two of those Harpoons must never launch.
